Each individual has one life to "spend", and each has their own concept of time and of "taking" it, as it were.

If one were to decide to spend five to seven years on a formal musical education, one might prefer to leave the overall experience with a doctoral level degree, in that amount of time, rather than baccalaureate. They might also wish to have spent, in that five, six or seven year time period, time with more than one tuba instructor and time in more than one school and/or part of the country.

I would believe that those who DID spend four to six years within this realm and left with a masters or doctoral level degree felt as though they "took" their time, too.
