I whoeheartedly agree with the premise about the Eb tuba in the American band movement. Having done exhaustive research on post-Civil War army bands, I am convinced that the
BBb did not make an appearance in the US until after 1890. None of the military bands whose instrumentation I was able to verify used anything other than Eb's. Furthermore,
in my extensive collection of band photos from the period, all one finds are Eb's. Both
Joe S. and Steve Bloom have read my published work on this and I am sure they will back
me up in this statement.
