I play tuba in a pretty good concert band where one of the other tubists plays a five-valve F tuba. The sound is so wrong that it makes me cringe. On a few occasions he has used a BBb tuba and sounded so much better in spite of the inevitable fingering flubs that I have encouraged him to borrow it more often. Have you ever heard Harvey Phillips talk about the tuba's "cash" register? That's where you need to sound good. You CAN learn to play high notes well on a CC tuba, but you canNOT make low notes sound rich on an F tuba. Keep your big horn and save your pennies for a few years to get the F.
