I agree with the statement regarding sound. When I started playing in my touring brass quintet, I needed to pick one instrument for traveling. The only CC I had was a 5/4, my other horn was a non-CC-sounding F tuba. The repertoire that we played was all over the place register-wise. I subscribe to the theory that you can make a big horn sound small, but you can't really make a small horn sound big. Playing the F with the quintet would have been easier, but the sound was the important issue, not ease of high notes or agility. Thus, I toured with the 5/4 as my quintet horn.

I make sure that my students have a great sounding CC instrument first and foremost. The F can always appear later. Most of my teachers would agree that going from lots of CC playing to F will only make the F sound better. Going from lots of F playing to CC will hinder the sound of the CC.
