I'm no expert on the acoustical physics of brass instruments, but I think any dent will cause a reflection in the sound wave. This reflection can affect intonation and response of the horn. I've heard the closer the dent is to the source of the vibration (mouthpiece), the more trouble it can cause. I think repairmen choose not to repair dents unless they close more than 1/2 of the tube. Any dent could cause a problem, some just aren't worth the time and money to repair. If something as small as these Acousticoils can affect the response and intonation of a horn, image what a dent that takes up 1/3 of the tube can do.
