The education about tubas depends on the director. In the Salem/Portland (Oregon) TCs, the director, John Richards (Oregon Symphony tubaist - retired), takes every opportunity he can to educate the audience about the instruments on the stage. There is always a collection of unusual tuba types on stage. Dr. Richards tells the audience some of the reasons for the variations. He also plays at least one unusual type to let them hear the differences. He even shows the audience how a group of 100 - 150 tubaists can sound like a B-57 in flight. These touches sure add to the fun. AND it does give an opportunity to educate.
