King 3Bs are good horns, one of the classic designs. If the horn is in really good shape then $800 is an OK price. The 3Bs can produce a bright big and clear tone, and have been used in Jazz, Rock, and traditional concert bands. Not really used much in the orchestra. Most players prefer the 3B without the F valve. Not only is the f vavle not needed for traditional jazz, but the vavle in the 3B is smaller in bore than the main tubing, making the horn play with more resistance than the same horn without the vavle. I have heard of one player who sent his 3B to Osmuns music to have the ports opened up to match the bore of horn, and that this really helped. My take on it is that if you are interested in a jazz, rock, or band type horn, then it's a good buy, if you want a orchestra type horn look for one of the large bore tenors.
