Nanette Kappus used to distribute a little yellow card with Binak that explained all of this. But here goes.

(I'm going to assume piston valves)

First, your valve piston and casing need to be clean, clean, clean--no old oil or slide grease residue. Use a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water to remove the old oil; rinse and dry with a soft rag.

Apply a drop or two toward the bottom end of the piston; slip the piston part way into the casing and rotate it which will create a thin film around the piston and the casing. Continue rotating the piston as you seat it home. This is what works for me.

If you need to reapply Binak, wipe the old oil and moisture from your piston and casing (no need to wash them) and repeat the drip-and-rotate procedure. The idea is to get a nice even film applied to all friction surfaces.

If you've left old petrolium-based oil behind, or some migrates from your slide libricant, it'll combine with the Binak to form a cloudy mucus-like sludge. You may need to throughly wash your horn out to remove all traces of lubricant if this persists.
