Ok... my school has an upcoming solo competition, sponsered by the latin american studies program. After wracking my brain, I can't think of any latin composers who have written for tuba. Here are the guidlines for the competition. If anyone has suggestions, they are certainly welcome!
Category 1: Open Interpretation: Two prizes will be awarded for the best performances by a vocal or instrumental soloist or by any instrumental, vocal or mixed chamber ensemble, except woodwind soloists or ensembles, who will have a separate prize category (see below).
Soloists may be accompanied by a keyboard instrument or accompanying equivalent (guitar, harp). The accompanying instrument may change during the short recital.
A competing ensemble must remain the same in all works of the short recital.
Competitors must compile a short recital of two or more works by Spanish and Latin American composers with the following characteristics:
a. Total combined duration of the recital: minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes.
b. The recital must include at least one work by a Spanish composer and at least one work by a Latin American composer (born in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, or Venezuela.)
c. The recital also must be stylistically varied: At least one of the works must be clearly reflect Spanish and/or Latin American regional styles and genres. At least one of the works must reflect international modern compositional styles and/or techniques.
d. Arrangements will be acceptable only for instruments for which original compositions cannot be found, and which use arrangements in accepted professional concert practice. Students are advised to carefully gauge the high quality of the arrangements, since program quality will be a determining factor when awarding the prizes.
e. Given that a competitor can potentially record his/her repertoire, the following works, cannot be programmed for the 2003 competition:
· Any works originally for solo and orchestra
· The works which have been recorded by previous competition winners in the last four years either in the original version or in arrangements for other instruments (see list below).
