This problem sounds a lot like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. I guess it is possible to have a neuralgia from the inferior alveolar nerve (the nerve the dentist is speaking of), however, usually numbness over the chin and jaw bone will be present. The best solution would be to try a soft diet for 2-3 weeks, avoid chewing gum, take anti-inflammatory meds (ibuprofen as long as he has no stomach problems and takes this with food), and apply a warm compress over the joint during the evening. Finally, ask if grinds his teeth at night - this would contribute to the problem. If things don't improve, he may need further evaluation. Hope this helps.
