I quite agree -- it is all too confusing. Rick's reply provided more details, and answered a bit more clearly than I did -- I guess I should wait to post until AFTER coffee in the morning!
Regardless of whether or not the present system is silly or confusing -- it is what it is. I was just trying (and Rick succeeded) in answering the original question. I suppose it does have some value with tubas in the key of C, because there *is* (or was) a C tuba and also a CC tuba. But since there is also a C euph (Cerveny makes one), the present naming convention may help to some degree. (Or not, depending on your perspective!)
