Marty, my Sony MD portable has manual record level controls (though you have to go through the menu to get to it, and do it for every recording).

Sony makes several microphones, some of which have higher input capabilities than others. But just because you use a Sony MD recorder doesn't mean you have to use a Sony microphone. I use an Audio-Technika AT-822, which has a maximum sound pressure level of 125 dB (at least 10 dB higher than any of the Sony consumer mikes). And the AT is linear at least down to 30 Hz.
