If you look at some more pictures of Dizzy playing, where you can see his corners, they ARE tight. It is entirely possible to puff parts of your cheeks while keeping your corners tight. Conte Candoli is another trumpet player who played with puffed cheeks but the corners were tight. I'm definitely not saying it's a good thing in general because it's not. Most people should not puff for the reasons you and others have stated. NO student who is learning to play should puff because it is detrimental to learning how to control the corners.
