Things don't change much.... Wards and Sears used to sell musical instruments -- at least the smaller and more popular ones, but including trombones -- in three quality levels "good" "better" "best" ; you can imagine what sort of stencil horns they were, I've seen a few and they were pretty wretched.
And music stores have the cheap imported 'student' lines that are probably not much better.
