I believe that where I live, the current legal advice is that home schooled children may NOT be excluded (by the school) from public school extra cirricular activities if they live within that district, but I think it also may differ from state to state. I teach in a public school and would be overjoyed if a talented home-schooled child with parental support wanted to participate in my music program.
I think solo and ensemble playing are both important to musical development. Good luck with the school, and I hope that he sticks with it!
