My 8th grader son started playing tuba this year in school and he absolutely loves it. His father and I tried numerous times to interest him in various musical instruments over the years but he hated them all. So we were thrilled when he discovered the tuba.
The problem is that we are thinking of homeschooling him because our town's entire school district is so bad. I've found someone (and ex band teacher) who would tutor him in tuba, so my son could still learn, but he will still miss out on playing in a band, playing at school games, etc.
My question is, isn't an instrument like the tuba pretty much meant to be played in a band setting, i.e., it is not meant to play tunes solo? Please forgive my ignorance where musical instruments are concerned. I just want to do what's best for my son.
