My brain will allow me to operate fluently in either 'slide mode' or 'key mode' (and, within key mode '3-key' or '4-key'). If I know any music on one, I automatically know it on the others -- which is great until I find myself trying to play high g on second valve (YIKES!!) I think this was part of the reason I gave up trying to pick up CC fingerings in college. I couldn't map the keys to the slide anymore, and my brain just refused to store the knowledge.

A related thing I've wondered about is whether other people find that they can sight sing accurately if they finger the notes, but cannot (or at least not nearly as well) if they don't (especially on tricky pieces with many accidentals)?

I suspect this is related in some way to the phenomena that many of us can approximately hum a Bb if we're holding our instrument, but can't if we're not.

Joe Baker, who boggles at the mind.
