If you're talking about orchestral and operatic recordings, you can't judge them by label. You have to take them on a case by case basis. I've heard some Naxos recordings (no royalties to the artists) that completely blow away the big name artists on DG, and vice versa. You have to listen and then judge. In other words, going by label is not a good short-cut.

One good example of this with Messiaen's "Turangalila" Symphony. The Polish recording on Naxos completely blows away the Kent Nagano/Berlin Phil. one recorded live on Teldec. Yet, I saw Nagano give an excellent performance of that work about 15 years ago in Berkeley, Ca. Go figure! Balances are partly the issue here.
