Actually, it's nothing new. Most consumers have a distinct inability to differentiate between "cheap" and "inexpensive". So they buy expensive cheaply-made shoes, clothes, and other garbage.
There will always be a market for quality merchandise. THere's got to be a good reason that most professional violinists don't play $25 Chinese instruments (cheap and inexpensive).
There are some cultures and countries that understand the concept of quality (not the USA 70's-80's idea of playing lip service to the concept, but real quality). For example, Germany largely understands the concept of quality and remains a major manufacturer of quality goods (not just tubas, but automobiles, machine tools, precision optics, etc.).
