You're absolutely right Sean, anytime I fly with the Anvil case it costs extra because the case is classified as "oversized". I usually don't run into the problem you describe with the taxi, however, because there are usually places at the airport where you can store the case for a small fee. Its kind of like checking your coat, just for a longer period of time. I do the same drill with the gig bag, so I just leave the case at the airport and pick it up when I fly out.
Of course, you are also right about my experiences not being the norm, since most of my travel is with the orchestra and they move everything for us. I guess my choice of cases is just slanted by a paranoid approach to keeping my horn scratch free rather than thinking about how I'll cart the case around on site. I suppose I should go out and keep working on the bomb shelter in the back yard... :^)
