The two most improtant things for a student are a dedication to improving their musicianship, and having a concept of the sound that they want to produce.
Lessons with students lacking these may make you feel that you are beating a dead horse.
Read everything you can get your hands on: The Tuba Source Book,Song and Wind, books about performance anxiety, etc.Get your students to go to live music performances, tell, show, and even take them where they can gain the experiential knowledge of music.Encourage them to buy CDs of the great musicians and orchestras.
In other words,do for them what you would do for yourself to improve as a musician.
