Besson 983 intonation

The 4 Besson 983 (EE flats) tubas our school just bought have very different intonation. The one I'm 'test-driving' at the moment requires 3rd valve for bottom line G, and all the notes from the G below that down are #.

It's all very well when you can choose an alternate fingering that's better, or can pull a slide (on 2 of the tubas, it seems the slides are mis-aligned, they're so stiff). In addition, I find the tubas all play slightly flat (open notes) with all the slides in.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with this model?

Cheers,

Ian Easton
