I heard on Public Radio that MP3.com is in trouble because there is so much pirating going on. I don't know if anything will come of this, but there may be some heafty fines in order if they are convicted.
On a happier note, I think MP3's are great for getting your music heard. The only problem is when people start taking advantage of this luxury. I have some hopped up CD burning software that will automatically turn MP3's into audio files. I can just drag a bunch of raw MP3's into the program and in about 30 min I have a full lenth, digital quality recording that only cost me 63 cents for the CD-R it was recorded on. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. If it's legal it's great, but if I'm breaking the law and taking advantage of insecure MP3 files, I'm hurting my ethical standard and I'm also hurting the musician who should rightfully get paid for their music.
I hope this gives you something to think about.
