I've always wondered about this myself, but I've seen these instruments. They featured proportionally larger bows and longer slide, and some had pretty large bells for the period. I believe instruments like this are still used in British Brass Bands. I've also heard of, but never seen, modern bass trombones with longer slides to allow the use of 7 positions WITH the trigger. The only thing I can figure is that either they turned their heads sideways (read Doug Yeo's discussion of just this technique), aligning the trombone more with the shoulders, adding about 7-8 inches of reach. Or maybe they used some sort of extension rod (I've seen elementary students do something like this to get 7th). Anyone know for sure? Also, was there any overlap of eras, where bones in G/F have a trigger?

Too bad they didn't have 'Quattro' slides -- they might still be used outside of British Brass Bands.
