Like most folks, I started on BBb in school and subsequently switched to CC and then picked up F in college. Bought a YFB621 when I joined the band and used it sporadically for the occaisional screech part that found it's way into the folder. Then I played the Besson 983......I sold the F and went cold turkey on Eb fingerings after years of thinking that I'd NEVER need an Eb. The instrument matched the "tuba in my head". Not being an orchestra player, the F was expendable although I still miss it from time to time. The 983 gets used for quintet playing as well as 1st tuba parts in brass ensembles and not to mention solo works. I've thought about using it on top octave for older band works but we rarely do a program with even a majority of those and I need the HB21 to keep up the sound with a group that puts out as much sound as ours.
