Whoa, Nellie!!! The man asked a completely innocuous question - you didn't need to jump on his case like that ("Then DON'T do music for tuba and tape..."). That being said, having worked on Tapestry III (the piece you mentioned), I can tell you there is no processing inherent in the performance score. There are several sounds on the tape that kind of sound like what you describe, so chances are they came from the accompaniment tape (unless they did some studio trickery).
