Well, I would expect that your arm wrapped around the bell to get to those front-action valves would have a much bigger effect on damping the bell than that fifth-valve slide.
Are all Rusk fifth valves mounted on the bell? It would seem to me that even in that position, it could be braced off one of the smaller branches; if for no other reason than to make removing the bell easier.
