I've noticed with fine-grain satin finishes that small scratches show up too visibly. Many silver polishes will also change (at least temporarily) the appearance of the satin finish, making it somewhat more glossy (this is probably a tarnish retardant wax or some such thing in the polish).
And they're murder to do nice-looking repairs on.
