What happened to "interpretation"? That's all that was, a different interpretation of the music. Nowadays, the fad is to play everything above the marked tempo(OFTEN with the result of diminished musicality). Back then, musicians were more interested with showcasing(and fans more impressed by)their musicality... not with contests of technical testosterone, like so many "musicians" today. Your statement that they "should adhere to his tempo markings " is subjective... the word "should", alone, has no definite meaning. Go buy a Pat Sheridan CD and see how often he adheres to the tempo markings. One word:
