A problem with Prokofiev and other Russians of his period is due to the surreptitious manner by which many of these works were obtained in the West in scores and parts full of mistakes due to hasty and faulty copying. Gene explains his rationale on his CD of orchestral excerpts in the Summit Orchesrtra Pro series. I tried Gene's way in a recent performance I did of Prokofiev 5th. I actually prefer some of the ink. But Gene occupies a realm that entitles to him to his artistic liberties. I like some of them more than others, but he still remains "the man."

By the way, case in point about copyist errors and legibility issues. Ever wonder about the expression "fastoso" that appears at the intro of Kije's Wedding. What the hell is "fastoso" anyway? C'mon. Mightn't it really supposed to be "maestoso?"
