I have not seen one of these devices, yet. I have, however, used some very strong permanent magnets as holding devices on machine tools. These magnets are turned on and off by moving internal components into contact with each other. Take a look at a magnetic chuck on a surface grinder... the magnets do not work until a handle is moved into position. There is another application where molds are being held in place on plastic injection molding machines. In this case, the magnets are capable of holding up to 200 pounds per square inch. Again, these magnets are turned on and off mechanically. I don't think this is a hoax but I'll reserve judgement until which time I can actually get my hands on a 'dent eraser'.
