Joe Alessi is the principal trombonist on the Bernstein/DG recording of Mahler 3rd. At the open dress rehearsal, Bernstein singled him out during his informal talk to the audience, remarking that of the many times he had performed Mahler 3 elsewhere, he had never heard the part played as beautifully as Joe played it. The Bernstein/DG is one of my favorite recordings of the 3rd. My "issues" with the current BSO have more to do with a general kind of phlegmatic malaise rather than anything as gross as sheer incompetence. These are still highly trained and experienced professionals, unfortunately mislead from the podium.

However, the recently reissued Ozawa/BSO Mahler 1st on DG Eloquence is very well played. This is early Ozawa, before he learned to get in the way.
