It seems to me conductors programming their own works are being self-destructive when they antagonize musicians, because the musicians can really make their work sound horrible. It's understandable, though, because as both conductor and composer they have much more at stake than any individual musician. But it also seems to me that musicians can be quite brittle when they are attacked. It's an unhealthy combination that doesn't serve the music.

I once got all defensive when a professor in grad school reprimanded me. I went to a friend seeking justification for my anger, and he told me not to blame the professor for my own problems. What a wake-up call that was!
