Yes, if you take an upright with you, then you are going to pay. Most upright players used to pay for an extra seat as far back as possible. There is no way I would be able to afford a flight case for one, and you would end up paying as much for the handling of loading as you would carrying it in a gig bag and buying the extra seat.
I confess to not knowing if airlines allow this now. (after 9/11). I don't take gigs that I can't drive to now.
