On a lighter note, a conductor friend of mine recently went through security at Dulles with a carry-on bag that contained his baton. Since this was a day trip, he did not bring any other luggage. Security checked his bag, found the baton and promptly told him he would have to check it. The box they gave him he described as one big enough to fit a tuba. So, he but his baton in the giant box and had to go through baggage claim and the whole nine yards.
I can actually see why they did this, but I'm sure it was a funny sight having a little baton in a giant box being checked probably weighing 5 oz.
