My feeling is that if you can afford the time taking a day off, you should. Professionals or other busy players who are working every day do not have this luxury, and they are probably the best ones to suggest what works for them in coping with maintaining their ability to play if their face is sore or injured. If you DO enjoy the freedom to take a day away, the two things I use to facilitate the natural recovery of MY face are vitamin e oil on my lips, and neosporin on the part of my lower lip that gets shaved. The vitamin e oil (inside those little gel capsules) I just smear on my lips, it facilitates healing and replacement of healthy normal cells and severely represses formation of stiff scar tissue. The neosporin I use to prevent shaved-off-beard hairs from getting ingrown after rigorous playing and irritation of the face. Both of these totally work for me,

Hope this helps
