At my school, we have 1 3/4 size Weril 4 valve tuba. We have 2 other 4/4 olds tubas with 3 valves. At the middle school level, I think that 3 valves are fine. The intonation help or the wider range that a 4 valve tuba offers is just not necessary with middle school. Unless we are talking about one of those Texas (or other similar community) middle school bands that sound like high school (from my area). The 3/4 size tubas are very good for the smaller kids but you definitely need a couple 4/4 for when they get to 8th grade.
