I always thought it would be nice to have a good double belled euphonium because it would almost be the equivalent of having a valved bass trombone (good for those of us with poor slide technique). Also, As euphoniums have evolved, they have become a good deal larger, I think I modern double bell euph might have a greater differnce in sound between the two bells since the large bell will probably be in the 11-12 inch range and have a relativly large throat. It should be the difference in sound you get between a large bore valve trombone and a euphonium. . . also, the compensating system seems to be the popular choice on the euphonium as opposed to the 4+1 non compensating-tuba. . . With a tuba all that extra tubing has to be that much longer and makes it stuffier and too heavy in most people's opinion (but I love my besson 3+1 Eb)
