Here's what I think was meant --
This assumption about rock bands using "smoke & mirrors" to make up for their lack of playing, while sometimes false, is more of a thought about the extra whiz-bang stuff their production crew uses on stage to keep the audience going.
The "smoke & mirrors" on symphonic recordings is, obviously, the engineering, editing, multiple takes becoming one "perfect" performance, and stuff like that.
Anyone can sound great on a recording given the time, knowledge, and equipment. We'll be hard pressed to witness ANY completely perfect live shows from any genre.
