I think the idea is to shake to music you listen to at home, in the car, etc. Maybe try shaking different rhythms within the beat of what ever you are listening to. Seems like a good way to develop your time away from the horn/metronome. Also, next time you get called for a latin euphonium gig (!), you'll know what to do when they hand you some sort of latin percussion.

As far as the metronome goes, put it on the big beats of what ever you're working on...for example if you're doing something at quarter=132, put the metronome on 66...beating half notes. Once you're comfortable there, put it (if it goes that low)on 33, so that it just beats downbeats of each bar. This makes you really develop your inner time.
