You know how the band kids talk and clap the note patterns? My teacher maintained that that was the wrong-headed way to go about things. He made a point about developing the "wheel in the head". Try this:
Take a piece of music in 4/4. Count steadily 1-2-3-4 aloud and clap the note patterns out. The point is to get your mind thinking the steady beat and subdivisions, but put the note patterns in your fingers where they belong.
Seems to work pretty well.
