The greater mass of tuba valves - piston or rotary - demands proportionally stiffer springs to achieve equivalent results than our smaller-valved friends.
I'd agree though that we certainly don't need springs from car shocks that some folk like to use on their tubas.
As a side, I've known some Euphers (with lots of euphs) have one installed with very heavy springs to work-up their finger strength. I see the point for training purposes but not for general playing.
