I traveled to Germany this summer with my band and transported my Tuba in a hard case. The way there was no problem, the "security" in Chicago was friendly and I didn't even have to pay extra (my case was one of those 70# Tuba boxes, total weight of 102#). On the way back, I requested to be present during security and they ended up not letting me be there the whole time and the case was not shut properly. This caused a small dent (not a big deal). If you travel rarely and don't want to pay for a hard case, buy the extra seat, it is much easier on your heart. If you will be traveling every other year or so, get a good hard case and it will pay for itself. Just watch the people who are "protecting" us... :)
