I am convinced though that for the pitch to remain constant, as the volume of air increases, the lip aperture must widen accordingly.

Consequently, you do not blow faster to play louder (as such), you simply shift a greater volume of air through a larger hole. Once we get to the mouthpiece throat (non-variable) that changes somewhat.
