Really, none of the bodily systems you mention work independently anymore than your (I'm being very general here) thighs and knees and calves work independently when you walk. You cannot control them on a cognitive level, that's why you "don't know exactly what you are doing." It's not a bad thing.

Go play tuba. It's fun. I'm now going to play the Trio melody to Stars and Stripes or Send in the Clowns for those of you that understand the reference.
