You're right when you say about the mouthpiece throat being non-variable but before we get to that part there are infinate variables. These are vital to any brass player yet you seem to skim-over them somewhat.
You'll know this but the lips, tongue, jaw, pharynx and glottis (then the intercostal muscles I guess) all work independently and affect the airstream entirely from full-on to stopping air altogether. Trouble is of course I don't know exactly what I'm doing with each of these and certainly can't tell a student what to do here. This is sadly a problem in brass playing...
