I don't think the "fake" needle is any better, but it's proven to me to be no worse.
The "improvement" (like many things) is obviously the size...and the ability to "hear" the lowest pitches (better than my old VHS tape sized Korg and later cell phone sized Roland, anyway) for only $20.
