Call me a backwards old fogey, but there are some "classic" designs. The Nikon F series, the Sony 10-transistor AM-FM radio in my kitchen (takes 3 D cells that last around 2 years of use), the Korg AT-12 tuner.

There was an older Korg tuner that had you set the note that you were tuning on a rotary switch. The great thing about that was the tuner was sensitive to harmonically related notes also. So, you could set a C on the switch and play a G and zero the needle for a perfect 5th. Sort of like the old strobo tuners.
