I'll grant that lubricants exposed to high temperatures and moisture will develop acid impurities (as might occur in an automobile crankcase), but this is the first that I've heard of out-of-the-can oil being acidic. I'm willing to be disabused of my notions however. But oil is used to protect everything from machine tools to scientific instruments during storage.

Maybe the answer is to coat the whole horn in cosmoline...
