Yeah, it's sad. But it's also a result of the way band music is taught in many of our schools. Instead of learning musical ideas separate from the instrument, band directors want (or are pressured, I don't know which) to get the band playing something as quickly as possible.

So the kid who has never played any kind of instrument (or even sung from printed music) is taught "if it's the second space on the staff, it's 1". No note names, no idea of how the note sounds or its relation to others. Just "second space is 1, but it's higher than the first ledger below, which is (most of the time) 1". The notion that it might be 12 or open or whatever is contrary to their ground of being. 30 years later, changing staves or keys looks like re-learning everything they know.

The fortunate ones are those who get shuttled around from instrument to instrument before finally settling in. Or the ones who have had the experience of reading music or singing before learning how to play their chosen instrumet.
